These concerns made people more hesitant to donate DNA even to scientific research.

The survey also highlighted a significant gap between public knowledge and the realities of how donated DNA is used in research. Researchers depend on donated DNA samples to advance genomics. Geographic Differences in Willingness to Donate

The research group noted meaningful differences based on where participants lived. Those in Egypt, Germany, Poland, and Russia were more willing to donate, as were participants from China, India, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom. Participants from the United States were the least willing to donate DNA to science. Researchers noted this may be related to how research and health care are approached in different countries, as well as varying levels of trust in institutions handling genetic data.
